Viviane Lima

Dr. Viviane Lima is an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia (since 2011), and the senior statistician and mathematical modeler at the BC Centre for Excellence in HIV/AIDS (since 2006). She has learned tremendously through the years due to ongoing (inter)national collaborations, the mentoring of different students/fellows/statisticians, and the continual search for new knowledge.

Since 2006, Lima has received national and international awards and has an excellent publication record (over 70 peer-review publications). In 2012, she received a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research Scholar Award and a grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH/NIDA). In 2013, she received a grant from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), which was ranked number one (score 4.30) in her committee.

Lima envisions a very active career, in which she will create a three-branch research program including biostatistical methods to analyze health services delivery data; disease mapping methods to analyse spatio-temporal trends in disease burden; and mathematical models of disease progression and transmission. This program will definitely create great research opportunities and will provide a new setting in BC where trainees will be supported across a variety of disciplinary and methodological backgrounds, further enhancing BC’s competitive advantage in population-health research and in HIV/HCV research.
