2022 suite of funding opportunities: contributing to advancing research-based evidence into action

24 January 2022

With an ever-changing landscape of health research, Michael Smith Health Research BC is here to strengthen BC’s health research system by supporting the people, institutions and activities that generate and use research-based knowledge to promote, restore and maintain the health of British Columbians. As BC’s health research agency, our funding awards help develop, retain and attract the people whose research improves the health of British Columbians, addresses health system priorities, creates jobs and adds to the knowledge economy.

The COVID-19 pandemic has further reinforced the importance of funding research to improve health and strengthen health care, support British Columbians through the pandemic, and contribute to economic recovery.

Our 2022 funding competition lineup provides opportunities for BC health researchers across all regions of the province. These competitions reflect rigorous program evaluation; collection of robust data on equity, diversity and inclusion; and direct input from BC’s health research community, who shared their needs and concerns with us. We listened and adjusted our processes and timelines to better support our health research community.

Announcing our 2022 competition suite

With the ongoing challenges posed by COVID-19, dates may be adjusted. Please check the funding page of our website regularly and follow us on Twitter for updates.

Convening & Collaborating and Reach

Our team funding programs, Convening & Collaborating (C²) and Reach, will launch concurrently in April 2022.

C² supports teams of health researchers and research users to co-develop research that can have a direct impact on patients and the public in BC, helping to ensure the research’s relevancy.

Reach supports teams of researchers and research users to disseminate research evidence with those who can directly benefit from it in order to impact health and care in BC.

Health Professional-Investigator

The 2022 Health Professional-Investigator (HP-I) competition will launch in early spring 2022.

This program is designed to help close the gap between health research and its implementation. HP-I awards support health professionals who are actively involved in patient care to conduct and apply research relevant to health.

Scholar and Research Trainee

The 2022 Scholar and Research Trainee competitions opened in November 2021. As announced last week, the full application deadlines for these programs have been extended.

The Scholar program supports early career health researchers, helping them form their own research teams, train the next generation of scientists and develop world-leading research programs.

The Research Trainee program supports the best and brightest health researchers in training to enable career development and support world-class health research in BC.

Partnerships

Strong partnerships are integral to fostering world-class health research in BC. We continue to partner with organizations to build research capacity, fill strategic gaps in the health system, and optimize investments in health research.

In all our work, we remain committed to supporting BC health research and helping researchers create and apply research evidence to practice, policy, and further research. For more information on partnerships, please contact our team.
