Dr. Tonia Nicholls is a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) new investigator and a Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research (MSFHR) career scholar. She is senior research fellow with BC Mental Health and Addiction Services; associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia (UBC); and adjunct professor in the Department of Psychology at Simon Fraser University (SFU). She currently holds operating grants from CIHR and the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC). She obtained a PhD with a specialization in law and forensic psychology from SFU.
Nicholls then completed a three-year post-doctoral fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry at UBC, and the BC Institute Against Family Violence. CIHR, MHCC, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, and MSFHR have all funded her research. She received the Canadian Psychological Association president’s New Researcher Award and the American Psychological Association’s award for Distinguished Professional Contributions for her work in developing the Jail Screening Assessment Tool (JSAT, Nicholls et al., 2005).
Nicholls is a co-author on the START manual and the START: Adolescent Version and has taken a lead role in some of the first START validation research.
