Roger Ashmus

Dr. Roger Ashmus is a post-doctoral research fellow who has been working with Dr. David Vocadlo in the Laboratory of Chemical Glycobiology at Simon Fraser University (SFU) since 2016. With a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Alberta, his research interests lie in combining organic chemistry, chemical biology and cell biology to discover chemical tools that can enable researchers to study disease-related enzymes at the cellular level.

The focus of Ashmus’ current research is on developing fluorescence-quenched chemical probes capable of monitoring and regulating disease-related glycoside hydrolases in live cells. These probes are being used to test the efficacy of some pharmacological chaperones and in a large screen in live cells to search for novel therapeutic agents for both Gaucher and Parkinson’s diseases.

Dr. Ashmus is a co-instructor in SFU’s Chemistry Department teaching special topics in organic chemistry (modern glycoscience). His career goal is to become an academic research professor.
