Dr. Matthias Görges is a biomedical engineer and Digital Health scientist at BC Childrenâs Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR). He designs and implements smart solutions and tools in situ in clinical settings and practice, particularly for child health. From 2016 to 2023, Dr. Görges was the co-lead of the Pediatric Anesthesia Research Team, and in 2017, he co-founded the Digital Health Innovation Lab.
As an Assistant and, subsequently, Associate Professor in UBCâs Department of Anesthesiology, Pharmacology, and Therapeutics and previous postdoctoral fellow in UBCâs Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, his team has solved key challenges in the design and evaluation of clinical tools for decision support systems and mobile information displays, including for pediatric pain management – for which he holds a 2020 Michael Smith Health Research BC scholar award; developed strategies to reduce false alarms and to predict undesirable outcomes in anesthesia and critical care. His long-term goal is to tackle the problem of predicting and preventing adverse events and outcomes by leveraging advances in digital health and machine learning to optimize clinical outcomes.
