Dr. Mark Ansermino’s research focus is on the use of new technology to reduce patient risk in anesthesia and intensive care. A large amount of physiological data is recorded and stored in modern clinical monitoring systems but, is currently under-utilized. Together with an interdisciplinary team of engineers and clinicians, he has developed methods to extract important features from frequently redundant information to provide decision-making support to clinicians and to monitor the quality of healthcare delivery. This research was recognized through the 2010 NSERC Brockhouse Prize for Interdisciplinary Research in Science and Engineering. More recently, he is building on success in bench-to-bedside research in anesthesia monitoring and decision support to a much wider application of mobile technology for global healthcare projects supported by Grand Challenges Canada, the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, and the Canadian International Development Agency. His overall research philosophy is to integrate knowledge translation in his research projects by involving end-users at all stages of development and evaluation.
