Mariko is an assistant professor at the School of Nursing at the University of Victoria. She is an early career researcher and has been a registered nurse for over 25 years. Her program of research is focused on the perspectives and experiences of older people living with complex and chronic conditions. Mariko specializes in dementia-related and community-based participatory research. Her work to date has brought attention to the challenging issues and transitions that older people, and people living with dementia, experience in our health care system and in Canadian society. Her work also focuses on the stigma and discrimination that many people with dementia experience, as well as their ongoing potential as social and active citizens. Overall, she is interested in research that aims to challenge societal understandings and assumptions about the aging and dementia experience, tat contributes to the development of age and dementia-friendly communities, as well as reveal and explore possibilities for health and wellness for people as they age.
