Joshua Giles

Dr. Joshua Giles is an assistant professor in mechanical engineering at the University of Victoria and director of the Orthopaedic Technologies and Biomechanics Lab. He gained his expertise in musculoskeletal biomechanics, surgical optimization, and medical device design through training at Western University (London, ON), Henry Ford Hospital (Detroit, MI), and Imperial College London (UK).

Giles’ research focuses on improving our understanding of the biomechanics of musculoskeletal conditions (e.g. arthritis) and combining these insights with novel technologies to improve the efficacy of treatment and patient outcomes. Key areas of focus include the development of technologies to assist clinicians in assessing patients pre- and post-treatment, and the optimization of surgical interventions through the development of computer models that can predict the best surgical plan for each patient on a personalized basis.

Giles has published 36 peer-reviewed articles in clinical and engineering journals and made 100+ contributions to national and international conferences. He is an active member of academic societies including the Canadian Orthopaedic Research Society.
