John Staples

Dr. John A. Staples is an academic general internist based at Vancouver General Hospital and a clinical assistant professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC). After graduating from medical school at the University of Alberta, he completed residency and fellowship in General Internal Medicine (UBC), a Masters of Public Health (Harvard University), a New England Journal of Medicine Editorial Fellowship, and a Health Services Research Fellowship (Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, Toronto).

Dr. Staples’ research leverages large, linked administrative datasets to better understand risk factors for traffic injury. His work has been funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada; published by JAMA Internal Medicine, JAMA Pediatrics, CMAJ Open and the World Bank Group; and discussed by The New York Times, The Washington Post, TIME and Newsweek. His team is currently working on a study that will use linked health and driving data to examine real-world motor vehicle crash risks after cardiovascular-defibrillator implantation.
