Jeffrey Masuda

Jeff Masuda, Professor at University of Victoria, is the NPI of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research-funded project, Holding Space for frontline Indigenous leadership in community-driven responses to the housing and overdose crises in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside (hereinafter Holding Space). Masuda’s work with Holding Space builds on his decades-long program of research centred on promoting health equity for the DTES. In 2016, he founded the Right to Remain Research Collective, which has employed participatory archival and qualitative methodologies to mobilize stories, histories, and collective action into tenant organizing and policy advocacy. A former CRC in Environmental Health Equity, Masuda brings expertise in public health, gender-based analysis, participatory methodologies, and anti-racist and decolonizing research theories and practices to Holding Space.
