Fernando González Ibáñez

Dr. Fernando González Ibáñez is an international postdoctoral fellow from Tijuana, Mexico. With the help of Health Research BC, Fernando will work with Dr. Marie-Ève Tremblay from University of Victoria and Dr. Lisa Julian from Simon Fraser University in the study of an organoid model of Tuberous Sclerosis Complex. His expertise centers in the use of electron microscopy and microglia, the resident immune cells of the brain. His work has contributed to multiple research fields which include Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s Diseases, Major Depression Disorder, Multiple Sclerosis and advanced the ultrastructural analysis of microglia, their organelles and the study of signs of cellular stress. His PhD work focused on studying the effects of ketogenic diet on behavior and microglia, in order to understand mechanisms involved in stress resilience. He’s currently implementing 3D electron microscopy to his research. He recently completed his PhD in Molecular Medicine at Université Laval in Quebec City, earned a MSc from Georg August Universität Göttingen, in Göttingen, Germany and a Bsc from Universidad Autónoma de Baja California in Ensenada, Mexico.
