Ariel obtained his BSc in Biopharmaceutical Science with specialization in medicinal chemistry at the University of Ottawa. He then began his graduate studies in Chemistry working under the supervision of Dr. Benjamin Rotstein at the University of Ottawa Heart Institute (UOHI). His graduate research, supported by the Ontario Graduate Scholarship, UOHI Endowed Research Scholarship, and Canadian Institutes of Health Research Doctoral Award, primarily focused on the synthesis and evaluation of positron emission tomography (PET) radiotracers for selective imaging of matrix metalloproteinase-13 activity in atherosclerosis. Due to his continued interest in nuclear medicine, particularly for molecular imaging of extracellular matrix remodeling and inflammation, Ariel will pursue a postdoctoral fellowship under the supervision of Dr. Francois Benard at the BC Cancer Research Centre. Funded by Health Research BC, he will aim to develop novel radiotheranostic pairs for serine proteases within the tumor microenvironment for early diagnosis and targeted treatment of metastatic epithelial cancers.
