New funding opportunity enhances seniors’ home and community care
11 December 2024
Michael Smith Health Research BC is launching a new funding opportunity to improve home and community care for seniors in British Columbia.
The Advancing the Use of Evidence in Seniors’ Home and Community Care program addresses population aging, one of four broad themes identified through Health Research BC’s priority-setting process. It supports teams of researchers and research users within the BC health system and academia to implement and evaluate the outcomes of evidence-based interventions in seniors’ home and community care.
Past research has generated considerable evidence on how to improve seniors’ care. There have however been challenges in adopting research findings into practice and policy within BC’s health system.
Better implementation of existing, evidence-based interventions in home and community care could have significant impacts on seniors’ well-being by supporting healthy aging and independent living. The new program will support BC’s capacity to implement evidence-based interventions and evaluate their outcomes.
The Advancing the Use of Evidence in Seniors’ Home and Community Care program will be funded through two stages:
1. A letter of intent for a development award.
These awards will support applicants to:
- develop a plan to implement and evaluate an evidence-based intervention in seniors’ home and community care; and
- build multi-disciplinary teams (including health care decision-makers, health care providers, researchers, trainees, and people with lived experience and community members) to support that work.
The primary applicant must be affiliated with an eligible BC health authority. Development award recipients will be invited to submit a full application.
2. Full application for a team award.
Successful applicants will receive a team award to develop an implementation plan for their intervention that specifies the desired outcomes for both the intervention and its implementation. Teams will also implement the intervention and evaluate the outcomes during the term of the award.
The competition will open in January 2025.

Full program guidelines, including eligibility and the application process, will be available in January.
