Tyrone Curtis

I am a mixed methods epidemiologist and public health researcher focusing on health inequities in 2SLGBTQ+ populations, with a special interest in sexual health. Originally from the Gold Coast in Australia, I am currently a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Nate Lachowsky’s Community-Based Health Equity Research Group (CHER) at the University of Victoria, BC. My current research is aimed at reducing inequities in access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among Two-Spirit, gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (2SGBMSM) in Canada.

I have an MSc in applied statistics from Birkbeck College, and completed my PhD in epidemiology and public health at the Institute for Global Health at UCL in the UK in 2022. My doctoral research was funded by a competitive Medical Research Council studentship, and focused on understanding the sexual behaviour, sexual health, and sexual healthcare needs of heterosexual-identifying men who have sex with men to inform public health interventions to improve the sexual health of this and other populations. For this work, I was awarded the New Investigator Award in Social Sciences at the Annual Canadian Conference on HIV/AIDS Research in April 2023.
