Dr. Reklow is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at B.C. Children’s Hospital Research Institute, collaborating with Dr. Sharon Dell in the Division of Respiratory Medicine. Robert’s research investigates breathing disorders that begin in childhood, such as severe asthma and primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD). A current goal is to validate an immunofluorescence diagnostic tool to improve detection of PCD. To facilitate this project, Robert was awarded the 2025 Margaret W. Leigh Early Career Investigator Award supported by the American Thoracic Society and PCD Foundation.
Robert earned his PhD and BSc (Honors) from the Department of Physiology at the University of Alberta. In these programs, he developed keen interest in understanding respiratory development, particularly in early life. His PhD thesis characterized signalling systems in brainstem respiratory control networks that respond to external stimuli, such as low oxygen, and how these systems impact breathing of newborn and premature infants. Robert is now applying his foundational scientific experience to develop and lead clinical studies, with the goal to improve the lives of children with severe respiratory diseases.
