Neil Cashman

Dr. Neil Cashman is a neurologist-neuroscientist working in neurodegeneration and neuroimmunology. His areas of specialty are motor neuron diseases, particularly amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), and amyloid encephalopathies, including prion illnesses and Alzheimer’s disease.

He is a professor in the Department of Medicine at the University of British Columbia (UBC), where he holds the Canada Research Chair in Neurodegeneration and Protein Misfolding Diseases, and academic director of the Vancouver Coastal Health ALS Centre at the GF Strong Rehabilitation Centre. He is also the founder and chief scientific officer of the biotech company ProMIS Neurosciences in Toronto.

Cashman’s honours and awards include the Jonas Salk Prize in in 2000 in recognition of a lifetime of outstanding contributions to basic biomedical research, his Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in at the UBC (2005-2019), election to the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences in 2008, and the Genome BC award for Scientific Excellence from LifeSciences BC in 2012.
