Dr. Michelle Wong is a clinical assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at UBC. She completed her medical degree and nephrology subspecialty at UBC, and internal medicine residency at the University of Alberta. She also completed a hemodialysis research fellowship at the Renal Research Institute in New York. She is currently pursuing a Master of Public Health in Clinical Effectiveness through the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health’s summer program. In addition to her clinical and research work, she teaches in the UBC MD Undergraduate Program in the Foundations of Scholarship/Flexible Enhanced Learning course.
Dr. Wong’s research has focused on dietary sodium, nutrition, and volume management in end-stage kidney disease. She has enjoyed working with many international research teams, including the World Hypertension League’s “Science of Sodium” initiative, the Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study, and the Chronic Kidney Disease Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study. Her current research focuses on protein-energy wasting, a common complication of advanced kidney disease. With her MSFHR Research Trainee award, she is working collaboratively with BC Renal to assess nutritional status among patients with chronic kidney disease and patients on dialysis, as well as patient outcomes associated with oral nutritional supplementation.
