Michael Diaz-Stewart is a coder turned biomedical research trainee. After working for over a year as a professional software developer in Toronto, Michael sought a degree in Biomedical Science from York University. Following graduation, his interests in applying artificial intelligence for biomedical applications led him to the ‘AI in Medicine’ lab at University of British Columbia’s School of Biomedical Engineering, where he is co-supervised in a Masters’ program by Dr. Jonathan Loree and Dr. Ali Bashashati. Michael’s research centers on applying computer vision algorithms for detecting and subtyping cancers. His research Masters’ thesis aims to better understand colorectal cancer subtypes through microscopic features present in tumor biopsy samples.
