Dr. Matthew Wiens is a global health epidemiologist at the University of British Columbia. His research focus for the past 10 years has been primarily on pediatric sepsis, with an emphasis on predicting vulnerability and improving outcomes following discharge. Wiens has lived in Uganda for two separate periods, for a total of six and a half years (2011–2013 and 2017–2020). Through his time here, he gained a mature understanding of the complexity of the public health challenges present in countries such as Uganda, and the need for innovative and contextually driven solutions.
