Dr. Maria Tokuyama is an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the Faculty of Science. She obtained her PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology from University of California, Berkeley. Shen then completed her postdoctoral training with Dr. Akiko Iwasaki at Yale University in the Immunobiology department, where she began working on endogenous retroviruses and understanding their roles in immunity.
The Tokuyama lab will elucidate physiological roles of endogenous retroviruses in health and disease by defining molecular interactions between endogenous retroviruses and immune cells. Their goal is to identify interactions that explain heterogeneity in disease progression and outcomes and to develop new strategies to reduce detrimental inflammation while boosting beneficial responses.
