Dr. Juan C. Sanchez-Arias obtained his Doctor of Medicine degree at the Universidad del Valle School of Medicine in his hometown Cali (Colombia) in 2014 and his PhD in Neuroscience at the University of Victoria in 2020. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Victoria in the Division of Medical Science working with Dr. Leigh Anne Swayne and Dr. Laura Arbour.
His current research focuses on the mechanisms underlying cardiac arrhythmia, structural cardiomyopathy, and seizures linked to a genetic change identified in Indigenous Communities in Northern British Columbia.
To achieve this, Juan will combine his clinical background and fundamental basic science expertise in assessing cellular excitability using advanced microscopy techniques and computational modelling. His career goal is to lead an interdisciplinary academic research laboratory carrying on clinically informed basic science research to improve brain and cardiovascular health.
