Dr. Joel Finbloom is an Assistant Professor in the Nanomedicine and Chemical Biology research theme at the UBC Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences. He completed his BA with honours in chemistry at Northwestern University with Prof. Samuel Stupp and his PhD in chemistry at the University of California Berkeley with Prof. Matthew Francis, where he received a National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate fellowship for his work developing stimuli-responsive MRI probes and protein-based nanoparticles for drug delivery. In 2018, Dr. Finbloom joined Prof. Tejal Desai’s group at the University of California San Francisco as a UCSF Health Innovation Via Engineering Postdoctoral Fellow, where he developed nanomaterials to advance applications in antimicrobial drug delivery and regenerative medicine.
At UBC, the Finbloom lab designs bioinspired nanomaterials that interface with microbial communities to advance human health. By working at the intersection of chemical biology, nanotechnology, and bioengineering, the Finbloom lab seeks to address critical challenges in pharmaceutical sciences such as the treatment of antimicrobial resistant bacterial infections.
