Gabrielle Legault

Dr. Gabrielle Legault is an Assistant Professor in Indigenous Studies in the Department of Community, Culture, and Global Studies at the University of British Columbia’s Okanagan Campus. A Métis scholar and community-based researcher, her work focuses on urban Indigenous wellness, youth-led programming, and the intersections of Indigenous identity, land-based activities, and health systems transformation. Dr. Legault leads interdisciplinary projects advancing Indigenous self-determination in research, with a particular emphasis on decolonizing methodologies, intergenerational knowledge exchange, and systemic change. She brings experience in ethical, strength-based partnerships and mentors emerging Indigenous and aspiring ally scholars across multiple projects and programs.
With the support of her Michael Smith Health Research BC Scholar funding, she will be leading a study that investigates how existing research standards, governance models, and data practices can better reflect urban Indigenous realities. This work will identify pathways for ethical research that advances Indigenous data sovereignty and inclusion within Canadian health research systems.
