Fidel Vila-Rodriguez

I am a clinician scientist focused on neurotechnologies to identify dysfunctional brain circuitry underlying brain disorders and apply neuromodulation techniques to treat neuropsychiatric conditions. As an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of British Columbia (UBC), I combine my role as a clinician and scientist to bridge the gap between cutting-edge research and clinical practice. The work in our lab has significantly advanced the understanding of neurobiological mechanisms involved in psychiatric disorders using concurrent neuromodulation and neuroimaging techniques, and other neurophysiological tools.
One of my primary research interests is the application of repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation in treatment-resistant depression (TRD).
I led the submission of rTMS for TRD to the Health Technology Assessment of BC. After HTAC’s endorsement in 2022, I am actively working in developing an implementation plan for rTMS in British Columbia including a provincial platform for training, guidelines, and monitoring of implementation. I ultimately seek to develop a learning health system for Interventional Brain Medicine in BC.
