Emily Gemmell

Emily Gemmell is a Postdoctoral Researcher at the University of British Columbia’s School of Population and Public Health. With a clinical and qualitative research background in maternal and child health, Emily’s doctoral work focused on understanding and measuring environmental determinants of child health. She developed and mapped an evidence-based, geospatial index of neighbourhood playability across 35 Canadian cities, and used street-view imagery and computer vision to understand features of supportive neighbourhood environments for children’s outdoor play. Her current research investigates urban environmental exposures and cognitive health in older adults. She is interested in research and policy that maximizes potential for movement, connections with people and nature, and cognitive health and well-being across the lifespan.
