Question: What is the current landscape for cannabis research in Canada and are regulations changing?

With the 2018 legalization of cannabis in Canada, there has been widespread interest in the effects of cannabis on mental and physical health. Research aimed at exploring the effects is underway but faces numerous regulatory changes.

Karina Thiessen

Neuroscience PhD student, UBC

Karina Thiessen is a neuroscience PhD student in the Behavioural Reward Affect + Impulsivity (B.R.A.I.N.) Lab and a MATRIX-N junior scholar at the University of British Columbia. Her research interests include interactions between stress regulation, substance use, and mental health disorders. She is currently conducting a clinical trial examining the effects of cannabis using Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and is involved in a study examining changes in acute stress response in people receiving treatment for concurrent mental health and substance use disorders. Karina also holds a bachelor of arts in psychology, a bachelor of education, and a British Columbia teaching license.
