Michael Smith Health Research BC announces new CEO
19 June 2025

The Board of Directors of Michael Smith Health Research BC (Health Research BC) is pleased to announce that Dr. Geoff Payne has been appointed President and CEO following an executive search process.
Dr. Payne joins Health Research BC from the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC), where he has served as President and Vice-Chancellor since 2020. He brings to the role more than 20 years of experience as a biomedical researcher and senior leader in British Columbia’s academic sector.
“We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Payne as our next CEO,” said Dr. Elinor Wilson, chair of the board. “He brings a deep understanding of our mission, strong leadership qualities, and a clear vision for the future. The board is confident that Dr. Payne is the right person to guide Health Research BC through its next chapter, building on the accomplishments of Dr. Bev Holmes and her team.”
Dr. Payne joined UNBC in 2004 as the founding faculty member of the Northern Medical Program. He holds a PhD in cardiovascular and renal physiology from Memorial University of Newfoundland which was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University. He is currently a Professor in the Division of Medical Sciences.
During his time at UNBC, Dr. Payne has held several leadership roles including the inaugural Assistant Dean for Education and Research and founding Director of the UNBC Health Research Institute. He also served as Vice-President, Research before assuming his position of President and Vice-Chancellor.
“Health Research BC has a track record of enabling research excellence for the benefit of all British Columbians,” said Dr. Payne. “It is an honour to lead this remarkable organization as it deepens and accelerates its support for the researchers who are shaping the future of health in our province.”
Dr. Payne takes over the role from Dr. Bev Holmes, who announced her intention to step away from Health Research BC last year.
“I am proud of what we have achieved at Health Research BC,” said Dr. Holmes. “This transition to Dr. Payne is a testament to our commitment to support talent, innovation, and impact.”
Dr. Payne will assume the President and CEO role by mid-December and a transition plan is underway.
