Health Research BC alumni attract more than $32M to British Columbia
20 March 2025

The impact of British Columbia’s health researchers is growing.
Michael Smith Health Research BC supports researchers through funding programs that help build research talent and capacity in BC. Many of these researchers recently received federal funding to improve the health and wellbeing of people in BC and across Canada.
Through its Project Grant program, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) awarded over $32.7 million in total funding to 46 BC-based projects led by researchers we’ve supported throughout the years. With 34 CIHR Project Grants and 12 Priority Announcement Grants, these researchers are leading the creation of new ideas and solutions to improve health. They’re advancing research in areas such as brain health, cancer, infectious diseases, reproductive health, and substance use.
This latest round of CIHR funding demonstrates how early support from Health Research BC enables researchers to secure major national grants, bringing additional funds to BC.
By investing in researchers at all career stages, we strengthen BC’s health research system — helping them develop their expertise, train the next generation of scientists, and turn novel ideas into real-world impact.
We celebrate these researchers and their dedication to improving lives through science. Their success reflects the strength of BC’s research community — and its potential to drive health and economic benefits for years to come.
