Childhood obesity is a major public health challenge in Canada, and is shaped by inequitable social determinants of health. The rates of obesity have been rising steadily in recent decades, especially among more marginalized communities/families, and obesity in childhood frequently continues into adulthood and increases the risk for chronic diseases. With advancements and improved access to the internet, digital technologies have great potential for managing childhood obesity as a proximal intervention congruent with more structural approaches.
This research program will explore ways to leverage digital technology to help manage childhood obesity. Dr. Sam Liu will co-develop (with families) and evaluate effective ways of using digital technology to deliver personalized and highly scalable family-centred childhood obesity management programs.
