Dr. Rod Knight is an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at UBC. He holds cross-appointments as an associate member in the School of Population and Public Health at UBC, as an affiliate faculty member with the Centre for Gender, Sexual Health and Equity, and as a research scientist at the British Columbia Centre on Substance Use. He leads a program of research focusing on the impacts of drug- and sexual-related harms, including those that can arise from the sexualized use of substances. In his research, he uses both qualitative and quantitative methods to identify patterns and contexts of substance use among a variety of key populations, including sexual and gender minority people living in British Columbia and elsewhere.
His program of research partners closely with several community partners (e.g. Health Initiative for Men, YouthCO) to identify and adapt promising interventions to address drug- and sexual-related harms. He also co-leads a program of research in Canada and France focusing on the expansion of HCV treatments among people who use drugs, as well as the impacts of COVID-19-related public health, social and economic measures among youth.
Dr. Knight is supported by a Scholar award from the Michael Smith Foundation for Health Research, and currently holds several major grants funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Vancouver Foundation, and Michael Smith Health Research BC. He is also a co-founder of CampOUT!, UBC’s annual retreat for sexual and gender minority youth.
