Dr. Maartje Wouters is a post-doctoral fellow at the Deeley Research Centre, part of the BC Cancer Agency's Vancouver Island Centre in Victoria. Her research focuses on the immune suppressive mechanisms in the tumour microenvironment, with emphasis on the cells in the stromal regions of tumours.
Dr. Wouters has a strong interest in cancer and immunology research. She was educated in the Netherlands, completing a Master of Science degree in biomedical sciences at the Radboud University, Nijmegen, with her thesis projects studying underlying mechanisms of leukaemia and predictive biomarkers for breast cancer. For her PhD at the University of Groningen, she profiled the immune response to ovarian cancer. Immunotherapy has recently revolutionized cancer therapy, but unfortunately responses in ovarian cancer lag behind.
Wouters’ research aims to find new targets for combination strategies to improve the efficacy of immunotherapy in this cancer type.
