Jeff Brubacher

Dr. Jeffrey Brubacher

Dr. Jeff Brubacher practices as an emergency physician at Vancouver General Hospital and as a clinical toxicologist at the BC Drug and Poison Information Centre. He is associate professor in the Department of Emergency Medicine at the University of British Columbia and director of the Vancouver General Hospital Emergency Medicine Research Division. He also chairs the BC Road Safety Research and Data Committee.

Brubacher’s research focuses on road safety with a special interest in road safety policy, road trauma outcome, and drug impaired driving. He is principal investigator on a prospective observational study, funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), investigating the role of cannabis in causing motor vehicle crashes. That study has measured blood drug levels in injured drivers since 2011 and is funded through March 2022. This study will provide better estimates of the risk of crashing after using cannabis, and will study the effects of cannabis legalization on road safety.

Brubacher is also principal investigator on a CIHR-funded evaluation of BC’s speed limit changes and on a four-year study (also funded by CIHR) that will investigate the association of prescription medications with car crashes. Brubacher’s team is planning a multi-centre prospective study of outcome following road trauma. Brubacher is also member of a team investigating outcome following traumatic brain injury.
