David Maberley

Dr. David Maberley is professor and head of the University of British Columbia’s department of ophthalmology and visual sciences, site head of ophthalmology at Vancouver Acute Hospitals, and regional head of ophthalmology for Vancouver Coastal Health Authority.

Following residency at the University of Toronto, Maberley undertook retina fellowship training at Queen’s University where he also completed a Master’s of Science in Community Health and Epidemiology. He completed his fellowship training in medical and surgical retina at Columbia University and Manhattan Eye, Ear, and Throat Hospital in New York City.

In 2011, Maberley established the Canadian Retina Society and served as its first president until 2015. He is past secretary of the Canadian Ophthalmology Society and retina section editor for The Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. Dr. Maberley’s research interests have included epidemiology, big data, and policy development for underserved populations. He is also involved in clinical trial design and translational research. Maberley has expertise in the surgical management of complex retina diseases including pathologic myopia, proliferative vitreoretinopathy, and diabetic retinopathy.
